Losing my job as a new single dad with a newborn and a mortgage was one of the hardest—and most defining—moments of my life. It forced me to rebuild from the ground up, not just for survival, but for purpose. That’s what led me to real estate—and to a life I never could’ve planned, but wouldn’t trade.
I had just bought my first home. My son was a newborn. I was freshly divorced. And then, I lost my job. The elevator company I worked for had been acquired, and my position was eliminated.
Suddenly, I was a single dad staring down a mortgage—with no backup plan.
I’d worked hard my whole life—tow truck driver, semi-truck operator, project manager—but nothing had truly fit. I kept showing up. But I hadn’t yet found work that felt like a calling.
At one point during the job hunt, I went to an interview that I thought was for an inside sales position. Turned out it was door-to-door knife sales. That was my breaking point. I called a friend to vent, and he invited me to grab a beer with him and a buddy.
His family ran a mortgage business and had just started a real estate firm. After hearing my story, he said, “You should get your real estate license.”
It wasn’t what I expected—but something about it stuck. A few months later, in early 2004, I became a licensed REALTOR®. At first, I just needed a way to support my son. But as I got into it, something deeper clicked. I loved guiding people through uncertainty, solving tough problems, and helping people feel secure during one of the biggest decisions of their lives.
That desire to serve wasn’t new—it came from how I was raised. My mom was a nurse. My dad was the guy who handed out sandwiches to the homeless downtown on his way to work. They didn’t talk about service—they just lived it. That stuck with me.
In 2007, I met my wife, Angie. She was also a single parent. We started dating just before the market crashed, and she stood by me during some of the toughest years of my life. We eventually blended our families and had one more daughter together. Through every season, family has been the anchor.
In 2012, an unexpected turn reshaped my career again. I had planned to launch a brokerage with two partners—but when they stepped away, I decided to move forward with a different partner. That’s how Master Key Real Estate was born—not out of perfect timing, but out of conviction. I was ready to do things right. To build something sustainable. To raise the bar.
From the start, my mission has been clear: serve with integrity, communicate clearly, and always do right by the client. With up-to-date market knowledge, strong negotiation strategies, and a creative, problem-solving approach, I help people move into the next chapter of their lives with confidence and clarity.
These days, my focus is on growing a values-driven, high-efficiency team—not the biggest, but one where everyone is aligned and moving with purpose.
Outside of work, I love heading north to fish on Lake Vermilion or explore the Boundary Waters. Angie prefers the beach, so we chase the sun together in the winter. It’s a good balance—just like life should be.
Looking back, nothing about this journey was predictable. But every twist led me here—and I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Real estate isn’t just about closing deals—it’s about helping people through meaningful life transitions. That’s what drives me.
Some of the clients I love working with most are first-time buyers finding their footing and seniors navigating big changes later in life. I hold a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation to better support those clients with both clarity and compassion.
With every client, my approach is the same: listen carefully, communicate clearly, and walk the path together—no pressure, no shortcuts. If it takes 40 showings to find the right home, then that’s what it takes.
Since founding Master Key Real Estate in 2012, I’ve focused on building a business rooted in trust, not volume. Most of my work comes from referrals and repeat clients—and that tells me I’m doing something right.
My goal isn’t to be the flashiest agent. It’s to be the one people count on. The one who shows up. The one who gets it done—with integrity, creativity, and care.
Sincerely,
Matt McLaren
